


When I saw that Thug Kitchen was coming out with their third cookbook, I was obviously excited. It’s straightforward, unapologetic and perfectly conversational – with all the cursing that us food bloggers usually try to edit out of our daily posts. You KNOW when you are reading a recipe from Thug Kitchen. The plant-based bloggers over at Thug Kitchen are one of the few who have a truly intense voice. I ended up buying it for my friend… and another copy for myself. The cover of their first cookbook caught my eye and after the first page I was hooked. I was browsing a bookstore, trying to find a good cookbook for a friend who doesn’t always have a ton of time to cook and likes pretty straightforward stuff. I remember the first time I ever saw a Thug Kitchen cookbook. It’s great for a Meatless Monday dish or whenever you are craving a good carb fest but don’t have a ton of time. It's not a great book for people who don't cook and anyone who has been vegan or vegetarian for any length of time already knows everything found here.Sun-Dried Tomato Carbonara from Thug Kitchen 101 is a brilliantly simple, complex meal that comes together in 20 minutes. It might be a good white elephant gift if anyone still does those, but it's just a little bit off topic to be a very giftable book. In conclusion, this is a library book I don't plan to buy. They have a chart based on the flavor of food and suggest what to add instead of salt if something just tastes blah. The part about adding acid instead of salt IS 100% WORTH SLOGGING THROUGH THE IRRITATING PARTS OF THIS BOOK. They also talk about tofu and other ingredients people may not have tried. like rinsing the quinoa so it won't be bitter, very good thing to include for people who haven't tried it. There's also a part where it says to pull out your food processor.um, yeah, I don't have one by choice (I live in an RV) but if your target is people who actually don't know/ never learned to cook, they don't have food processors either. The granola bar thing was also a waste of space. If you're trying to save time, just microwave the oatmeal and add frozen fruit. pretty sure every container of quinoa has a recipe on it and it's usually oatmeal. For instance, the timesaving quinoa oatmeal. Some recipes are stupid and pretentious, which is ironic because this cookbook claims to be rebelling against *those* cookbooks. There's a watermelon drink that's also decent. *you want to make a good latte? They got that right (you can use regular milk and sugar, the world won't end). I will make a modified version of this again. *coconut lime rice with red beans and mango. *haven't made the summer squash soup, but I will.


Both were good when they were made, the Tahini one didn't do well as leftovers. *the salad dressings were very good, but I'd have liked to see more. This sounds like it was written by a child trying to be edgy. I'm a huge fan of the f word in real life, and it's fine in print, but please learn more than 2 swear words. It's definitely a hipster cookbook.įirst off, there's swearing on every page. No more avoiding the produce corner of the supermarket. No more ketchup and pizza counting as vegetables.
